PM Modi: Committed to making India a global hub of sporting excellence
New Delhi, Aug 29 (PTI) – On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to making India a global center of sporting excellence.
August 29 is celebrated as National Sports Day in memory of Major Dhyan Chand, considered the greatest hockey player in history. He helped India win gold medals in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote: “Best wishes on National Sports Day. Tributes to Major Dhyan Chand Ji, who has inspired generations.”
The Prime Minister said his government is dedicated to promoting a culture of sports and fitness, strengthening institutional support for athletes, and providing modern training facilities and stadiums.
He added: “In the last decade, India’s sports landscape has changed a lot. From grassroots programs to world-class facilities, we are building a modern sports ecosystem. Our government is committed to supporting athletes, improving infrastructure, and making India a global hub of sporting excellence.”
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also said that the new National Sports Administration Bill will help India become a sporting powerhouse.
Speaking at an event at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, he added: “By passing this bill, the Modi government has taken a big step towards making India one of the top sporting nations. Sports have been part of India’s tradition for centuries, and under PM Modi’s leadership, the country is moving towards becoming a sports superpower. On Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary, I wish everyone a Happy National Sports Day.”
