September 3 (PTI): Manoj Jarange ended his five-day hunger strike on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. He began the fast on August 29, 2025, to press for the Maratha community’s demands for reservation. He broke his fast at Azad Maidan in Mumbai after the Maharashtra government’s cabinet sub-committee accepted several of his key demands, including the issuance of Kunbi caste certificates to eligible Marathas.
After the decision to end his hunger strike, To ensure quick cleaning of Azad Maidan and its surrounding areas, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation last night began mechanical cleaning operations. BMC workers labored through the night to clear large amounts of garbage, food waste, and water bottles from the streets of South Mumbai and Azad Maidan.
A heap of water bottles and amounts of food waste remained at various spots both inside and outside the protest site late into the night. Unlike Monday, the area around the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) was much cleaner on Tuesday. However, heaps of garbage, including leftover food and drink, mineral water bottles, wrappers, paper plates, and cups, could still be seen.
A Maratha community activist said on Tuesday that they would have cleaned the protest site themselves, but the protesters from outside Mumbai had already left, and local people had departed due to the Ganpati Visarjan. The BMC team worked overnight to clean the streets and Azad Maidan.
